Research Update June 2024

Does Instructional Coaching have an impact on leadership?

According to the results of the Western Australian Secondary Schools Executive Association’s (WASSEA) latest research project, the following was noted by the research report author, “Overall, the Curtin Education Community instructional coaching program has had a positive impact on the instructional leadership attribute of Content Knowledge in Pedagogy. Similarly, from the perspectives of both the coaches and the coachees, the program has had a positive impact on the instructional leadership attribute of Communication Skills.”

While this project had some limitations, it certainly showed insights into the effectiveness of Instructional Coaching. A comment from a participant indicated a secondary impact from the project on leadership development. Shanara reported “Instructional Coaching assisted the professional progress of my career as the collaborative communication skills and leading whole school-based approaches to teacher development and effectiveness are highly sought after examples of lead teacher knowledge and practice.”
